Ninety glorious minutes inside Britain's most charming ritual — the stories, the silver, the scones, and every small courtesy that turns an afternoon into an occasion. Come as you are; leave knowing exactly what to do, and rather longing for the next invitation.
If you have ever sat down to Afternoon Tea and quietly wondered whether you were doing it right, this session is for you. It is 90 minutes, live online, for anyone who would like to attend or host with real confidence.
Together we follow how a simple afternoon refreshment became an occasion recognised the world over, shaped by fascinating personalities, changing customs and centuries of tea culture.
Every detail has a story behind it. The position of the teacup, the order in which the food is served, the correct way to enjoy a scone and even the question of when to add the milk all reveal something about the character and history of the occasion.
Through live demonstrations, guided practice and expert instruction, you will learn how to prepare the table, serve tea beautifully and enjoy each course with ease. We will also talk about the small, unexpected moments that most etiquette books leave out altogether.
The session is warm, practical and interactive. You will be able to ask questions, practise what you learn and receive personal guidance throughout.
Afternoon Tea is an experience to understand, appreciate and share.
Your trainer demonstrates each element, answers your questions and helps you put it into practice as you go. Do bring your own teacup, saucer, teaspoon and napkin if you can — it is far more enjoyable when you can follow along.
No previous etiquette training or specialist knowledge is needed.
“Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”
Follow the history of tea from its arrival in Britain to the elegant drawing rooms of the nineteenth century. Discover the people, social changes and customs that developed Afternoon Tea into the tradition we know today. You will also learn the differences between Afternoon Tea, High Tea, Cream Tea, Elevenses and other British customs that are often confused.
An elegant occasion begins before the tea is poured. Learn how to issue or respond to an invitation, choose suitable clothing, arrive at the right time and greet your host or guests warmly. We will also consider whether you should bring a gift, where to place your belongings and how to make a polished entrance without feeling too formal.
Discover how to arrange an Afternoon Tea table with care and confidence. You will learn the correct placement of teacups, saucers, plates, cutlery, napkins and serving pieces, and look at cake stands, teapots, tea strainers, milk jugs and sugar bowls. You will also learn how service differs in a private home, traditional tearoom and luxury hotel.
Explore the main varieties of tea, how they differ and which foods complement them. Learn how to warm the pot, measure the tea, use the correct water temperature and allow enough time for brewing — then how to pour and serve neatly, use a strainer and offer milk, lemon, sugar and honey correctly.
Understand the traditional structure of an Afternoon Tea menu and the order in which each part is enjoyed. We will explore finger sandwiches, savouries, scones, preserves, clotted cream, pastries and cakes, how to eat each item gracefully, and what to do when the food is delicate, layered or awkward to manage. We will also consider dietary requirements, contemporary menus and thoughtful alternatives.
Learn how to hold your teacup and saucer comfortably, stir your tea quietly and place your teaspoon correctly. We will also cover napkin etiquette, posture at the table and the small gestures that help you appear composed while still feeling natural and at ease.
Good hosting is about making people feel comfortable. Learn how to welcome guests, make introductions, manage the flow of service and keep conversation inclusive. You will discover how to accommodate personal preferences and dietary requirements discreetly, while creating an occasion that feels polished, generous and relaxed.
What should you do if tea spills into the saucer, crumbs fall onto the table or tea leaves find their way into the cup? Learn how to handle these common mishaps quietly and confidently. This practical guidance will help you feel prepared for real occasions, where everything may not go exactly to plan.
You will learn the customs of Afternoon Tea and, just as importantly, why they exist. This is about far more than where a teaspoon belongs or how to hold a teacup.
By the end you will know how to walk into the occasion without a flicker of doubt, enjoy it properly, and give your own guests that same sense of ease.
“By the end of the session, the customs of Afternoon Tea will feel familiar and easy to follow. You will be ready to enjoy the occasion and host it beautifully.”
Beginners are very welcome, as is anyone who simply wants to polish what they already know — nothing is assumed. If you would like a small private session for friends, family or colleagues, do get in touch.
